Who Invented the Standard T-Shirt?

The T-shirt is a wardrobe staple and perhaps the most standard outer attire in the entire world.

What we love most about this little piece of material called the T-shirt is that it comes in diverse styles, colors, and dimensions to appeal the exclusive tastes of pretty much any group.

But did you know that the T-shirt got its start among military men who originally wore them as an undergarment below the attires.

A Brief History of the T-Shirt

T-shirts were first familiarized in the United States at about the period of the Spanish World War. They were given to associates of the U.S. Navy to get worn as an undergarment below the attires. Formerly called a union suit, it was a one-piece attire in the color white that came with badges. Today, one might call it a onesie, yet it's used as an undergarment and is tauter and well-fitting than its current equivalent.

In 1902, after the suit started to increase in status, textile company P.H. Hanes Knitting began manufacturing varieties of the clothing.

Instead of a one-piece, it transformed into a two-piece undergarment that seen much like a union suit but was tinier in length. In 1938, Sears hurled varieties of the new T-shirt, which was termed a “gob shirt”. The leading T-shirt was comparable to a popular plain T-shirt and could be used as an undergarment, as well as outward clothing.

We can trace the T-Shirt as we know it today back to 1950 and 1955, correspondingly, following Marlon Brando and James Dean, who are the two establishment fathers of the T-Shirt.

The rising popularity of the T-shirt

T-shirts developed even more widespread with the community when performer Marlon Brando displayed the attire in the movie A Street Car Named Desire. These inspirations triggered T-shirts to gain more consideration and became trendy as stylish outer attire.

How the T-Shirt Has Evolved Over Time

The '80s were the existence of high waisted jeans and BIG hair. The T-shirts were a method of bragging about the alliance or fraternity on university grounds. The '90s conveyed the days of crop tops and "purposefully cutting" T-shirts in a manner to display way extra skin than needed. T-shirt clips also gave us an option to tie up the shirts with elegance! The initial 2000s brought the age of wearisome T-shirts to session. Fraternity girls and guys put on the shirts to fitting like the respite of the wardrobe. The current grace has advanced the T-shirt into not only a wardrobe essential but a way of life. The Greek life group wears over-sized shirts and leggings in any background.

How Production Methods Have Changed

New means of making the T-shirt lithography easier had been developed, like the litho-transfer. Over time, the on-the-spot side became potential at various formations. More and more corporations are finding T-shirts to be a device for trades and labeling. Customers may be aware of outstanding shirt enterprises like happy face T-shirts.
